Who we are

LINX (playlinx.app) is a free daily word-chain puzzle. This page explains what data we collect when you use the public game. We do not require a player account to play. See also our Terms & Conditions.

What we collect

  • Gameplay on your device — progress (e.g. streak, completed tiers) is stored in your browser (local storage) so the game can remember your state.
  • Anonymous session ID — a random ID in your browser used to group events from the same visit. It is not your name or email.
  • Usage analytics — events such as opening the app, starting a puzzle, completing a tier, using a hint, sharing, or playing LINX EXPRESS. These are sent to our database (Supabase) to improve the game.
  • Ratings — if you rate a puzzle or LINX EXPRESS, we store your rating linked to that session and date.
  • Profile page— your stats page (/profile) is computed entirely on your device from gameplay already stored in your browser: streaks, solves, play times, badges, and an activity calendar. None of these per-player stats are uploaded. The "where you stand" comparisons use anonymous, aggregated percentiles computed from the usage analytics described above — never your individual data. We record anonymous events when the profile page is opened, when stats are shared, and when the "save my stats" button is tapped.
  • Share images — stat and result cards are generated on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to share or download the image yourself.
  • Google Analytics — if enabled, Google Analytics 4 receives page views and the same kinds of gameplay events, using cookies and similar technologies. See Google's privacy policy. You can opt out via Google's browser add-on or your browser's privacy settings.
  • Vercel Analytics — our host may collect lightweight, aggregated traffic metrics.

What we do not collect (for normal play)

We do not ask you to sign in to play. We do not collect your email, phone number, or payment details through the public game. The only time we receive contact details is if you choose to create an optional account (see below).

Accounts (optional)

You can play LINX fully without an account. If we offer accounts and you choose to sign in — with Google or an email magic link — we collect and store:

  • Your email address — used to sign you in, and to send sign-in (magic link) emails. We do not send marketing email without separate consent.
  • Basic Google profile info — if you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google. We never see your Google password. See Google's privacy policy for how Google handles the sign-in.
  • Your saved game stats — when signed in, the gameplay stats that previously lived only in your browser (streaks, solves, badges, play history) are stored against your account so you can keep them across devices.

Authentication is handled by Supabase Auth. You can ask us to delete your account and its saved stats at any time using the contact below; we will remove them within a reasonable period unless we must keep something for legal reasons.

Why we use this data

We use it to run the daily puzzles, measure completion and retention, fix bugs, and improve chains and features. Our lawful basis under UK GDPR is legitimate interests (running and improving a free game). For optional accounts, the basis is performance of a contract (providing the account you asked for). Where analytics cookies require consent under UK rules, we rely on your continued use of the site after reading this notice.

Who processes data

Data may be processed by service providers we use to operate the site, including:

  • Vercel (hosting)
  • Supabase (database and analytics storage)
  • Google (Analytics, if enabled)

They act as processors under their own terms and may store data outside the UK.

How long we keep it

Analytics and ratings are kept for as long as needed to operate and improve LINX, typically up to several months unless we need them longer for security or legal reasons. You can clear local progress by clearing site data in your browser.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you may ask for access, correction, or deletion of personal data we hold about you. Because play is mostly anonymous, we may not be able to identify you from a session ID alone — please contact us from the same browser or with as much detail as you can (date, device, what you did).

You may complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Children

LINX is not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal data, contact us and we will delete it where appropriate.
